One LMDE sat in the central bay of each Lunar Module descent stage and slowed the vehicle from lunar orbit to a hover and landing, throttling down to about a tenth of its rated thrust. NASA Marshall says the pintle injector of SpaceX's Merlin 1D was first used in this Apollo-era engine.
