  • glass fibre 20 % by weight (3412R); 30 % (3413R)Glass fibre reinforcement

Best for

Stiff, heat-resistant injection-moulded housings: a 5520 MPa flexural modulus and a 146 °C heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa for the 3412R grade (IDES datasheet)

Weakest at

Notched impact and elongation: a notched Izod impact of 110 J/m and an elongation at break of 5.0 % for the 3412R (IDES datasheet), and no space ageing data for either grade

Risk at a glance

  • People Moderate. No SDS found for either grade
  • If it fails Moderate. Softening under sustained load above the heat deflection temperature
  • Corrosion Low. The 3412R datasheet prints an equilibrium water absorption of 0.29 % at 23 °C, so moisture uptake is small but not zero.

Why it exists

LEXAN 3412R is a stiff, glass-filled polycarbonate for injection-moulded housings. The IDES datasheet prints a flexural modulus of 5520 MPa and a Vicat softening temperature of 166 °C for this grade, and the 3413R grade is described as 'a 30% glass reinforced polycarbonate' on its distributor page.

Recipe

Bisphenol-A polycarbonate reinforced with glass fibre; polycarbonate repeat unit (C16H14O3)n (Wikipedia, Polycarbonate, photo-ageing equation)

LEXAN 3412R is bisphenol-A polycarbonate made by reacting bisphenol A with phosgene, then compounded with glass fibre at the share printed as 'Glass Fiber Reinforcement, 20% Filler by Weight', and an internal mould release. The IDES datasheet prints 'Glass Fiber Reinforcement, 20% Filler by Weight' and 'Additive: Mold Release'. The 3413R grade is printed as 'GF30' in the distributor's product name.

What it can do

Hold a stiff housing shape

a flexural modulus of 5520 MPa for the 20 % glass 3412R (IDES datasheet, ASTM D790).

Stay dimensionally stable under moderate heat

a heat deflection temperature of 146 °C at 1.8 MPa (IDES datasheet, ASTM D648).

Insulate electrically at 50 Hz

a dielectric constant of 3.17 and a dielectric strength of 19 kV/mm (IDES datasheet, ASTM D150 and D149).

How it compares

The 3412R and 3413R values here come from different sources: the 3412R values are from an 11-year-old IDES printout, and the 3413R values are from a distributor page with few test methods. Compare the two grades by row, not as a ranking, and do not compare them with the unfilled polycarbonate profiles, which are different grades with different test conditions.

The same measurements for each material, so you can compare them. Each row names the key condition under the value; the full conditions and methods are in the numbered notes under Technical details. Compare every grade in the family.

Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Stiff injection-moulded housings: 5520 MPa flexural modulus for the 20 % glass 3412R.
  • Heat-resistant parts under light load: 146 °C heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa.
  • Electrical insulating parts: 19 kV/mm dielectric strength in air (IDES datasheet).

Watch out for

  • Impact: the notched Izod impact of 110 J/m is low for a tough polycarbonate, so use the 3412R for stiffness rather than impact.
  • Heat under load: the 146 °C heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa sets the upper limit for loaded parts.
  • Ageing: no UV or humidity ageing test on this grade was read in this run, so exterior use needs its own test.
  • Space: no flight, vacuum or atomic-oxygen result was found for either grade.

LEXAN 3412R is a 20 % glass-filled polycarbonate with a 5520 MPa flexural modulus and a 146 °C heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa in the IDES datasheet. The 3413R 30 % grade and its distributor values are less well sourced, and there is no SDS or space result for either grade.

Corrosion and compatibility

What happens when it meets other materials and environments.

Corrosion and compatibility
EnvironmentConcernWhat happens
Humid air or water immersion (moisture uptake, not hydrolysis tested) low The 3412R datasheet prints an equilibrium water absorption of 0.29 % at 23 °C, so moisture uptake is small but not zero.1
Elevated temperature in air (dry thermal ageing of a glass-fibre polycarbonate, not this grade) not rated A 2022 study aged a glass-fibre polycarbonate in air at the temperatures its abstract lists, and the colour and mechanical results were not read in full in this run.2

1 Humid air or water immersion (moisture uptake, not hydrolysis tested) Moisture uptake changes stiffness and dimensions slightly. The IDES printout gives 0.29 % at equilibrium at 23 °C (ASTM D570). Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

The 3412R grade has no SDS in this run. The monomer bisphenol A carries PubChem GHS hazards that describe the monomer, not the finished pellet.

Monomer hazard
PubChem lists bisphenol A with H317 (99.9%) and H318 (99.9%) and the signal word Danger. These describe the monomer, not the polymer.
Handling
The IDES datasheet has no hazard section, so handling follows the supplier's current SDS for the grade and colour.

If it fails

The failure route in these sources is softening under load, not chemical attack.

Heat
The heat deflection temperature for 3412R is 146 °C at 1.8 MPa and 149 °C at 0.45 MPa, both printed as typical values.

Test details
The original wording and numbers from the sources, for readers who want them.

Failure risks

Failure risks
FailureTrigger and consequence
Softening under sustained load above the heat deflection temperaturemoderate severityLoad applied at a temperature close to the heat deflection temperatureThe 3412R datasheet prints a heat deflection temperature of 146 °C at 1.8 MPa, so a loaded housing close to that temperature loses stiffness. The printed values are typical, not specification limits.

Handling and storage

  • Dry the pellets before moulding. The IDES injection table gives a drying temperature and time and a suggested maximum moisture content.
  • Ask the supplier for the current SDS and product data sheet for the grade and colour, since the IDES printout is from 2011 and the distributor page is undated.
