Why it exists

Cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) is an amorphous, transparent thermoplastic. It is made by copolymerising a cyclic olefin, norbornene, with ethylene, so its chains do not pack into crystals. The result is a clear, dimensionally stable plastic with low moisture uptake. The glass transition temperature can be tuned by the norbornene content. The TOPAS 8007S-04 grade has 78 °C and the TOPAS 5013S-04 grade 134 °C. Heat resistance is traded for clarity and barrier.

Where it's used

Optics

TOPAS 5013S-04 is sold for optical parts. The manufacturer describes it as highly transparent and flowable, with a heat deflection temperature of 127 °C.

Medical and pharmaceutical packaging

The Zeon brochure lists ZEONEX medical grades for pre-filled syringes, vials, IV bags and blister packs. The TOPAS safety sheet lists medical articles and packaging among its uses.

Space

No space use of COC or COP was found in the sources read.

Recipe

Ethylene-norbornene copolymer, (C2H4)x(C7H10)y, amorphous

Cyclic olefin copolymer is an ethylene-norbornene copolymer. Ethylene is copolymerised with a cyclic olefin, norbornene, and the norbornene share sets the glass transition temperature. Other COP grades are made by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation followed by hydrogenation (Wikipedia).

What COC is made of
IngredientShare of the weightWhat it does
Norbornene C7H10 35 mol% in TOPAS 8007 and 46 mol% in TOPAS 5013 (reference values) Cyclic monomer. Its share sets the glass transition temperature, from 78 °C at the lower norbornene share to 134 °C for the grade with more of it.
Ethylene C2H4 The balance of the chain Linear monomer copolymerised with the cyclic olefin (Wikipedia, production routes).

Weight shares are as printed in the sources.

What it can do

Clarity

91 % (TOPAS 8007S-04) and 92 % (ZEONEX 5000)

Light transmission is 91 % at 2 mm for TOPAS 8007S-04 and 92 % at 3 mm for ZEONEX 5000.

measured

The heat deflection temperature under 0.45 MPa is 127 °C for TOPAS 5013S-04 and 75 °C for TOPAS 8007S-04.

Stiffness

3200 MPa

measured

Tensile modulus is 3200 MPa for TOPAS 5013S-04 and 2600 MPa for TOPAS 8007S-04.

Glass transition

134 °C

measured

The glass transition runs from 68 °C (ZEONEX 5000) to 162 °C (ZEONEX 790R) across the Zeon grades, and from 78 °C to 134 °C across the TOPAS grades read.

Water vapour

0.8 g/(m2·24h) for ZEONEX 5000

ZEONEX 5000 passes 0.8 g/(m2·24h) of water vapour at 40 °C and 90 % RH on 100 µm film.

How it compares

COC sits among clear, low-moisture thermoplastics. Against the COP grades read here, the TOPAS COC grades have a lower glass transition than the high-Tg ZEONEX and ZEONOR grades (134 °C at most, against 162 °C), so the COP grades give more heat margin. The TOPAS 8007S-04 barrier grade has the lowest glass transition of the TOPAS grades read, at 78 °C. ZEONEX 5000 is lower still at 68 °C and is the most barrier-oriented of the Zeon grades read, which trades heat resistance for moisture protection.

Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Clear optical and medical parts where low moisture uptake matters: 91 % light transmission for TOPAS 8007S-04 and 92 % for ZEONEX 5000.
  • Moisture-barrier packaging: TOPAS 8007S-04 is sold as a high moisture-barrier grade for pharmaceutical packaging.

Watch out for

  • Heat: the lower-Tg TOPAS 8007S-04 grade deflects at 75 °C under 0.45 MPa.
  • Radiation: gamma doses of 25 and 100 kGy in air changed the microstructure of the samples studied. The radius of gyration fell from 10.9 nm to 9.9 nm at 100 kGy.
  • No space data: no atomic-oxygen, outgassing or UV-ageing result was read for COC or COP.

COC is a clear, low-moisture thermoplastic for optics and packaging. Its heat limit and the missing space data are the main open questions.

Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

The TOPAS safety data sheets do not classify the resin under EU CLP or US GHS rules. The main risks are hot material and dust.

The resin
Not classified under CLP (EU sheet) or GHS (US sheet, version 10). The sheets describe the product as essentially inert and non-toxic.
Hot material
Molten or hot material can cause thermal burns. If it sticks to skin, do not pull it off; cool the skin and let it come off naturally.
Dust
Dust can form an explosive mixture in air. The US sheet prints inert-dust limits of 5 mg/m3 respirable and 15 mg/m3 total dust.
Fire
Combustion can give carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

If the material overheats

Decomposition is a risk above 350 °C. The heat deflection values set the limit for parts under load.

Above 350 °C
The US sheet warns of a risk of decomposition above 350 °C, and says decomposition products depend on temperature and air supply.
Under load
TOPAS 8007S-04 deflects at 75 °C under 0.45 MPa. TOPAS 5013S-04 deflects at 127 °C under the same load.

Storage and radiation

Store indoors, dry and away from UV light. Gamma radiation changes the microstructure of COC.

Sunlight
The US sheet says to store the product away from direct sunlight or ultraviolet light.
Gamma
Gamma doses of 25 and 100 kGy in air changed the microstructure of TOPAS samples. The radius of gyration of the 35 mol% norbornene sample fell from 10.9 nm to 9.9 nm at 100 kGy. The study did not measure mechanical properties.

Microstructure change from gamma radiationlow severityGamma dose of 25 to 100 kGy in air at room temperatureRadius of gyration in the 35 mol% norbornene sample fell from 10.9 nm to 9.9 nm at 100 kGy. The study measured microstructure only, so the effect on strength is unknown.
Decomposition from overheatingmoderate severityProcessing or storage above 350 °CThe US sheet warns of a risk of decomposition above 350 °C. Decomposition products depend on temperature and air supply.

Side effects on surrounding parts

Side effects on surrounding parts
AffectsEffect
Firefighters and people near the fireIn a fire, incomplete combustion can give carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The sheet says combustion gases of organic materials must be treated as inhalation hazards.
Surface water and sewer systemsThe product is not readily biodegradable. It should not be released to the environment or flushed into surface water or sewers.

Handling and storage

  • Do not handle hot or molten material without suitable protective equipment, and do not exceed the recommended process temperature, to limit decomposition products.
  • Store indoors in closed containers in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or ultraviolet light.
  • Avoid temperatures above 350 °C, which carry a risk of decomposition.
  • Avoid dust formation and provide exhaust ventilation where dust is formed. Wear a dust mask or respirator with a particle filter if the dust exposure limit is exceeded.
  • Ground and bond containers when transferring material, and take measures against static charge build-up.

Mitigations

  • For moisture-sensitive packaging, the TOPAS 8007S-04 grade is sold as a high moisture-barrier grade for pharmaceutical packaging.
  • Where more heat margin is needed than the TOPAS COC grades give, the ZEONEX 790R COP grade has a glass transition of 162 °C against 134 °C for TOPAS 5013S-04.

Supply and geography

How common the raw materials are and where they come from.

Ethylene and norbornene (feedstocks)

Not a mineral; no crustal abundance or producer-share figure for ethylene or norbornene was read in this run.

Recycling
Safety data sheet: like most thermoplastics, the product can be recycled; dispose of it in accordance with local regulations.
