Yield and tensile strength of stainless steel by grade and condition
Stainless steel 304 (UNS S30400) and stainless steel 316 (UNS S31600) plate, sheet and strip to ASTM A240 have a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa, per Outokumpu (304) and ATI (316). Duplex stainless steel 2205 (UNS S32205) plate to ASTM A240 has a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 655 MPa, per ICAST Alloys.
Condition moves strength more than the grade name does. Stainless steel 301 (UNS S30100) full hard has minimums of 965 MPa yield and 1276 MPa tensile (cold worked, plate, sheet and strip, ATI), and 17-4 PH stainless steel (UNS S17400, Type 630) in condition H900 has minimums of 1170 and 1310 MPa (aged bar to ASTM A564, Austral Wright Metals).

Which yield and tensile strength should you design with?
Design with the minimum yield strength printed for your exact grade, product form and condition, not with a typical value. For standard austenitic plate that minimum is 205 MPa (170 MPa for the L grades); for duplex stainless steel 2205 plate it is 450 MPa. Hardened or aged grades with a stated minimum start at 450 MPa. If the order does not name the condition, ask for it.
- Standard austenitic grades (304, 316, 321, 347): 205 MPa minimum yield; 170 MPa for 304L and 316L.
- About double that: duplex, 400 to 450 MPa minimum yield for plate, or cold-worked 301 tempers.
- Above 700 MPa: aged precipitation-hardening or hardened martensitic grades. Use the finder.
What do the strength terms on this page mean?
Each term is defined once here, and the definitions are general engineering knowledge, not drawn from our data. Yield strength is the stress at which stainless steel starts to deform permanently; the values on this page are measured as 0.2 percent offset yield strength or proof stress. The other terms follow.
- Tensile strength
- the highest stress the steel carries in a tensile test before it breaks.
- MPa
- megapascal, a unit of stress equal to one newton per square millimetre (N/mm2).
- Minimum and typical value
- a minimum is the lowest strength a product standard or datasheet guarantees; a typical value is what a normal heat reaches.
- Annealed
- heat treated to the softest, lowest-strength condition.
- Cold worked
- strengthened by rolling or drawing at room temperature, sold as tempers from 1/4 hard to full hard.
- Aged (precipitation hardened)
- heat treated after solution treatment so that fine particles strengthen the steel; condition names such as H900 or RH 950 name the treatment.
- Austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex
- the main families of stainless steel, grouped by crystal structure; duplex steels mix austenite and ferrite.
Where does each stainless steel grade sit on a yield and tensile strength map?
Annealed austenitic stainless steels sit at the lower left of the map, at 170 to 393 MPa yield strength and 485 to 717 MPa tensile strength across the records on it. Annealed duplex grades sit higher, at 400 to 550 MPa yield. Hardened, tempered or aged grades reach 450 to 1896 MPa yield. Filter by condition to see which grades have data in each.
How to read it: each box is one sourced record. Its width is the yield strength range the source prints, its height the tensile strength range, both in MPa. 99 records are drawn; 24 more are in the table only, because they hold one of the two numbers or repeat another record exactly.
The filters need JavaScript. Without it, both charts and the full table below still show every value.
Text version: every plotted value is in the table below the chart, and the family table further down summarises the ranges.
filled: the source calls the value a minimum dashed: typical light: the source does not say dashed diagonal: tensile = yield. Swipe sideways on a phone.

Values are copied from the grade's profile record and checked against it each time the site is built. Tensile ranges run from the minimum to the maximum the source prints. N/mm2 and MPa are the same unit. Rows are room temperature, or temperature not printed; rows printed only in ksi, and rows at cryogenic or elevated temperature, are left out.
How should you use these strength numbers in practice?
Pick the number that matches your grade, condition and product form, use its minimum, and compare yield strength rather than tensile strength for parts that must not deform. Then check the product form and the temperature. The five rules below each rest on sourced numbers from this page, and the general engineering statements in them are marked as such.
- Read the condition before the grade. Stainless steel 304 has a tensile strength of 210 to 1050 MPa across tempers from annealed to full hard, per Wikipedia. Annealed ASTM A240 plate has a minimum of 515 MPa, per Outokumpu.
- Design on yield, using the minimum. Yield strength is where a part starts to bend permanently and tensile strength is where it breaks (general engineering knowledge). In our paired records the typical yield strength is 7 to 71 percent above the matching minimum. Details below.
- Look at the gap between yield and tensile strength. The ratio of minimum yield to minimum tensile strength is 0.40 for Stainless steel 304 plate (Outokumpu), 0.69 for Duplex stainless steel 2205 plate (ICAST Alloys) and 0.89 for 17-4 PH stainless steel H900 bar (Austral Wright Metals). A ratio near 1 leaves little margin between yielding and breaking (general engineering knowledge). On the map, boxes near the dashed diagonal have the least.
- Match the product form. Super duplex stainless steel 2507 has a minimum yield strength of 550 MPa as seamless tube and 530 MPa as forgings (both Alleima). Duplex stainless steel 2205 is 450 MPa as plate (ICAST Alloys) and 485 MPa as annealed tube (Alleima). Super-austenitic stainless steel 904L has 240 MPa as cold-rolled sheet and 220 MPa as hot-rolled plate (EN 10088-2 minimums, Outokumpu).
- Strength falls when the part is hot. Several profiles hold elevated-temperature rows. This page leaves them out, so open the grade profile before using these numbers above room temperature.
What are the yield and tensile strengths of common stainless steels?
Stainless steel 304 and 316 plate, sheet and strip have a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa, and 304L and 316L 170 MPa. Duplex stainless steel 2205 plate has 450 MPa. Aged 17-4 PH stainless steel bar has 725 MPa (H1150) to 1170 MPa (H900). All are ASTM or EN minimums. The table gives each value with its condition, form, basis and source.

Different bases and forms sit in one table on purpose, so you can see how far the answer moves. The full table with 123 records is under the strength map.
How strong is each stainless steel family in each condition?
In the annealed condition, austenitic grades on the map reach 170 to 393 MPa yield strength, duplex grades 400 to 550 MPa, and ferritic grades 170 to 379 MPa. Martensitic and precipitation-hardening grades reach higher values only when hardened, tempered or aged. The table below gives each range, with the grade names and the number of records behind it.

Minimums and typical values are mixed, and a range is the spread across grades, not of one grade. Read across a row to see what condition does inside one family; read down a column to compare families. "Condition not stated" means the source names no temper.
Which stainless steels have a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa or more?
12 grades in our data have at least one record with a source-stated minimum yield strength of 450 MPa or more: 1 austenitic, 3 duplex, 1 ferritic, 5 martensitic, 2 precipitation hardening. Standard annealed stainless steel 304 and 316 do not reach it; cold-worked stainless steel 301 does from the 1/4 hard temper at 517 MPa (ATI). The finder on the map answers the same question for any number.

Only values the source calls a minimum are counted, in any condition, so a part made from an aged or hardened grade needs the right temper to reach the value. Grade labels are the profile short names; each opens the full grade profile.
Trap 1
Should you design with minimum or typical strength?
Design with the minimum. A minimum yield strength is what the product standard or datasheet guarantees; a typical value is what a normal heat reaches. In our paired records the typical yield strength sits 7 to 71 percent above the minimum for the same grade and condition, so a typical value overstates what a purchase order guarantees.
Where both values come from one datasheet (3 of 14 pairs), the typical yield strength is 7 to 21 percent above the minimum. Pairs from two sources also differ in product form and test method, so read them as a size of effect, not as a correction factor.

The 316L row shows how a number can mislead: one Combined Metals Company datasheet row labelled Annealed (Min), inside a table of typical values, prints 290 MPa, while the ATI minimum for 316L plate, sheet and strip is 170 MPa. Always check which basis a table quotes.
Trap 2
How much stronger is cold-worked stainless steel than annealed, and what about 304 and 316?
Cold working raises the minimum yield strength of stainless steel 301 (UNS S30100) plate, sheet and strip from 205 MPa annealed to 965 MPa full hard, 4.7 times, per ATI. We hold no yield strength for any cold-worked temper of stainless steel 304 or 316: not found in any source we hold. Do not read the 301 numbers as 304 or 316 values.
The Stainless steel 304 record says it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, is strengthened by cold working and is weakest when annealed (Wikipedia). It holds one tensile strength range across all tempers, 210 to 1050 MPa (Wikipedia), and the 316 record holds none. The nearest sourced numbers are for stainless steel 301, which ATI says reaches a higher tensile strength when work hardened than other stable austenitic grades.
The 301 minimum tensile strength rises from 515 MPa annealed to 1276 MPa full hard, 2.5 times (ATI). Treat that as an upper bound for austenitic grades, not a prediction for 304 or 316.

Cold work also changes other properties. ATI notes that it raises the magnetic permeability of 301, so a cold-worked part should not be assumed non-magnetic. For 17-4 PH, the record says heavy cold forming should be done in the H1150 condition and the part re-aged afterwards.

Why do 304 and 316 have the same yield strength, and duplex about double?
Stainless steel 304 and 316 plate, sheet and strip share the same ASTM A240 minimum yield strength of 205 MPa. Duplex stainless steel 2205 plate has a 450 MPa minimum (ICAST Alloys), 2.2 times as high. Our 2205 record describes an austenite-ferrite structure with roughly twice the proof strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels (ATI, Alleima).
Swapping 304 for 316 therefore changes corrosion resistance, not the minimum strength. The 316 profile credits molybdenum with better general, pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, and with higher creep and tensile strength at elevated temperature. The low-carbon L versions of both drop to 170 MPa yield and 485 MPa tensile (ATI).
The minimum tensile strength of 2205 plate, 655 MPa, is only 1.3 times that of 304 and 316. Our 2205 record describes a nitrogen-enhanced steel of nearly equal parts austenite and ferrite (ATI). The reason for the higher yield strength is the two-phase structure and nitrogen content (general engineering knowledge, not in our data).
| Record | Yield Tensile | Yield strength, MPa | Tensile strength, MPa | Yield ÷ tensile (ratio) | Yield vs 304 |

| Lean duplex stainless steel 2304plate; minimum; ATI | 400 | 600 | 0.67 | 2 times | |
| Lean duplex stainless steel 2101 (UNS S32101)plate over 5 mm thick, ASTM A240; minimum; Atlas Steels | 450 | 650 | 0.69 | 2.2 times | |
| Duplex stainless steel 2205plate, sheet and strip, ASTM A240, UNS S32205; minimum; ICAST Alloys | 450 | 655 | 0.69 | 2.2 times | |
| Super duplex stainless steel 2507, tubeseamless tube and pipe; plate is not in our record | 550 | 800lowest of 800 to 1000 | 0.69 | 2.7 times |
Super duplex 2507 is a tube figure, not directly comparable with the plate rows; our 2507 record has no plate value. The 2304 and 2205 rows are annealed plate minimums (ATI, ICAST Alloys); 2101 is ASTM A240 plate over 5 mm thick (Atlas Steels).
What do we not know about the strength of stainless steel?
We hold no yield or tensile strength for any cold-worked temper of stainless steel 304 or 316, no typical yield strength for 304, no plate value for super duplex stainless steel 2507, and no spread between heats. 38 of 123 records do not name the condition. Values printed only in ksi, and values at other temperatures, are not used on this page.
- Cold-worked 304 and 316. No yield or tensile strength for any temper; only the 210 to 1050 MPa range across tempers for 304 (Wikipedia), and nothing for 316.
- Typical 304 and 316 test values. The 304 record holds minimums (205 and 210 MPa, Outokumpu) and a tensile table range; it holds no typical yield strength. The only room-temperature test result for 316 is 193 to 213 MPa for three annealed plate tests at 295 K (NIST (NBSIR 80-1627)), which brackets the 205 MPa minimum.
- Temper names. 38 of the 123 records do not name the condition. They sit under "Not stated"; we did not guess.
- Rows left out. Values printed only in ksi, and rows at cryogenic or elevated temperature, are not used on this page. Some grades, such as 420 and 440C, have ksi-only rows from a second source.
- Other products. Super duplex 2507 plate, and grades not yet in the database such as 15-5 PH and 13-8 Mo, have no values here. Elongation, hardness and fatigue are outside this page.
- Heat-to-heat spread. A source's typical value is a single number; we hold no scatter bands.
What do people ask about stainless steel yield and tensile strength?
What is the yield strength of 304 stainless steel?
Stainless steel 304 (UNS S30400) plate, sheet and strip to ASTM A240 has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa in the annealed condition, per Outokumpu. Outokumpu gives 210 MPa for EN 1.4301 hot rolled plate. Both are minimums, not typical test results. Cold working raises the yield strength, but our 304 record holds no yield strength for a cold-worked temper: not found in any source we hold.
What is the tensile strength of 304 stainless steel?
Stainless steel 304 (UNS S30400) has a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa as annealed ASTM A240 plate, sheet and strip, and 520 MPa as EN 1.4301 hot rolled plate, both per Outokumpu. AZoM prints 510 to 620 MPa with no condition named. Wikipedia gives 210 to 1050 MPa across tempers from annealed to full hard, because cold working strengthens stainless steel 304.
Is 316 stronger than 304?
No. Stainless steel 316 (UNS S31600) and Stainless steel 304 (UNS S30400) plate, sheet and strip to ASTM A240 both have a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa (ATI for 316, Outokumpu for 304). Stainless steel 316L and 304L are both 170 MPa yield and 485 MPa tensile, per ATI. The 316 profile credits molybdenum with corrosion resistance and elevated-temperature strength, not a higher room-temperature minimum.
Is duplex stainless steel twice as strong as 304 or 316?
In yield strength, about twice. Duplex stainless steel 2205 (UNS S32205) plate to ASTM A240 has a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa (ICAST Alloys), 2.2 times the 205 MPa of stainless steel 304 and 316 plate. Lean duplex stainless steel 2304 is 400 MPa (ATI), 2 times. Minimum tensile strength differs less: 655 MPa against 515 MPa, 1.3 times.
How much does cold working increase the strength of stainless steel?
Cold working raises the minimum yield strength of Stainless steel 301 (UNS S30100) plate, sheet and strip from 205 MPa annealed to 965 MPa full hard, 4.7 times, per ATI. Alleima gives 895 MPa minimum yield for cold-worked duplex 2205 seamless tube against 485 MPa solution annealed. We hold no cold-worked yield strength for stainless steel 304 or 316, so do not apply the 301 numbers to them.
What is the strongest stainless steel?
In our records the highest values are for hardened or aged grades. 17-7 PH stainless steel (UNS S17700, EN 1.4568, Type 631) in condition CH 900 has a typical yield strength of 1896 MPa and tensile strength of 2034 MPa (Cleveland-Cliffs). Stainless steel 440C (UNS S44004), hardened and tempered, is 1896 and 1965 MPa, typical (AircraftMaterials UK). The highest minimum yield strength is 1205 MPa, for PH 15-7 Mo stainless steel in condition C (Ulbrich).
