What is Calcium silicate insulation board (Promatect-L) used for?

Uses recorded in the sources include Dryers and industrial furnaces (heavy industry); Ventilation and air conditioning equipment (OEM); Load-bearing pipe columns (oil and gas).

Why it exists

Calcium silicate board is a lightweight, rigid insulation board. Promat's PROMATECT-L datasheet gives a classification temperature of 500 °C, a bulk density of 450 kg/m3 and a thermal conductivity of 0.08 W/m K at 20 °C. Those figures explain where the board is chosen: dryers, industrial furnaces and ventilation equipment, where it both insulates and holds its shape. The datasheet classification is not a continuous service limit.

Where it's used

Dryers and industrial furnaces

Promat lists dryers and industrial furnaces, under heavy industry, as application areas for PROMATECT-L.

Ventilation and air conditioning equipment

Promat lists ventilation and air conditioning technology, with apparatus construction, under OEM application areas.

Load-bearing pipe columns, oil and gas

Promat lists load-bearing pipe columns under oil and gas. The datasheet gives a bending strength of 3.1 N/mm2, so any structural use needs a load check.

Recipe

Calcium silicate board: an inorganic board made from siliceous and calcareous raw materials with reinforcing fibres (Promat does not print the PROMATECT-L composition)

Calcium silicate board is a rigid insulation board made from siliceous and calcareous raw materials with reinforcing fibres. CalSilBoard says its boards are mixed, formed as a slurry and autoclaved under high pressure to grow a xonotlite crystal structure. Promat does not print the composition of PROMATECT-L, so the parts below describe the general process, not a measured recipe.

IngredientShare of the weightWhat it does
Calcium silicate (xonotlite) matrix xonotlite not printed for PROMATECT-L The crystalline matrix formed in the autoclave; it gives the board its strength and low conductivity.
Siliceous raw material not printed for PROMATECT-L Silica source for the autoclaved calcium silicate phase.
Calcareous raw material not printed for PROMATECT-L Lime source for the calcium silicate phase.
Reinforcing fibres not printed for PROMATECT-L Add strength to the board.

Weight shares are as printed in the sources.

What it can do

Insulation at 20 °C

0.08 W/m K at 20 °C

Promat prints a thermal conductivity of 0.08 W/m K at 20 °C. It rises to 0.11 W/m K at 400 °C, the highest temperature in the table.

Classification temperature

500 °C

Promat classifies the board to 500 °C. This is not a continuous service temperature, and the datasheet gives none.

Strength

2.4 N/mm2 cold compressive

The cold compressive strength is 2.4 N/mm2 and the bending strength is 3.1 N/mm2. The datasheet names no test standard for either.

Board size

1200 mm wide

Promat delivers the board 1200 mm wide, in lengths of 2500 or 3000 mm and thicknesses of 20 to 50 mm.

How it compares

Promat rates PROMATECT-L at 500 °C as a classification temperature and gives no continuous service temperature, so that figure should not be set against the continuous-use limits of other insulation materials. CalSilBoard, a Chinese maker of calcium silicate board, lists separate maximum and continuous service temperatures for its own grades, so the two datasheets use different limits and must be read with each one's definition. Unlike a fibre blanket, the board is rigid and can be machined, as the Promat datasheet describes.

Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Dryers and industrial furnaces, where Promat gives a 500 °C classification and a 0.08 W/m K conductivity at 20 °C.
  • Ventilation and air conditioning equipment, which Promat lists as an OEM application area.

Watch out for

  • The 500 °C figure is a classification temperature. No continuous service temperature is printed for PROMATECT-L.
  • Cutting makes dust. Use extraction and observe the inhalable dust limit.
  • A bending strength of 3.1 N/mm2 is low for load-bearing use without a design check.
  • No space flight, vacuum or radiation data for calcium silicate board were found in the sources we hold.

Promatect-L is a calcium silicate board with datasheet values for temperature, density and conductivity. It has no space flight data, and the datasheet prints no continuous service temperature.

1 Moist or humid air The datasheet lists resistance to moisture and chemicals among its properties, and prints no moisture test, humidity exposure or ageing data. Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

Promat's datasheet gives no hazard classification for PROMATECT-L. Cutting it makes dust, which Promat says must be controlled.

Dust
Promat says to observe the maximum workplace concentration values for inhalable dust when cutting, and recommends dust extraction.
Eye contact
PubChem's record for generic calcium silicate, which is not this board, lists the hazard statement "Causes serious eye irritation" from some company reports.
Fire
Promat gives the board a building material class of A1, non-combustible, under the German DIN standard. PubChem's generic record also says calcium silicate is not combustible.

If it overheats

Heat is the main test for this board. It shrinks slightly after long heating, and the datasheet gives a classification temperature, not a service limit.

Shrinkage
Promat prints a shrinkage of 0.25 % after 12 hours at 500 °C.
Limit
The 500 °C figure is a classification temperature. The datasheet prints no continuous service temperature for PROMATECT-L.

Failure risks

Failure risks
FailureTrigger and consequence
Shrinkage under long heatinglow severity12 hours at 500 °CLinear shrinkage of 0.25 % as printed. This may open gaps at joints in a lined furnace; that effect is an inference from the printed figure, not a statement in the datasheet.
Breakage under bending loadmoderate severityBending load on the boardThe datasheet prints bending strength of 3.1 N/mm2 and cold compressive strength of 2.4 N/mm2, and gives no safe working load. Design checks are needed before any load-bearing use.

Handling and storage

  • When cutting to size, observe the maximum workplace concentration values for inhalable dust and use dust extraction, as Promat recommends.
  • When fixing with screws, use slot holes, as the datasheet recommends.
  • PROMATECT-L can be machined with special processing machinery and suitable tools; Promat says precise machined parts can be made.

Mitigations

  • Use dust extraction at cutting points, as Promat recommends for cutting to size.
