What is Aluminium alloy 6082 used for?

Uses recorded in the sources include Trusses, cranes, bridges, ore skips and highly stressed structures; Welded constructions and shipbuilding; Machined parts from T6 and T651 plate.

Why it exists

Aluminium alloy 6082 is a wrought Al-Mg-Si alloy with manganese, built for strength. The plate datasheets give a minimum 0.2 % proof stress of 255 MPa and tensile strength of 300 MPa for T6 and T651 plate of 6 to 12.5 mm, and the highest of the 6000 series alloys according to the Yieh and thyssenkrupp datasheets. Its density is 2.70 g/cm3. The thyssenkrupp datasheet lists trusses, cranes, bridges and highly stressed structures as uses. Temper is set by heat treatment: T6 is solution heat treated and artificially aged, and T651 is also stress relieved by stretching. The profile keeps the temper and product form on each value.

Where it's used

Structures and transport

The thyssenkrupp datasheet lists milk churns, trusses, cranes, ore skips, beer barrels, bridges, highly stressed applications and transport applications. The Gleich datasheet lists welded constructions and shipbuilding.

Machined parts

The Yieh datasheet says that in plate form 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining, and that T6 and T651 machine well and produce tight coils of swarf with chip breakers.

How it compares

In this profile the 6082 record is a structural alloy, and the datasheets rank it as the highest-strength 6000-series alloy and a replacement for 6061 in many uses. The sources give no strength-per-mass numbers against other alloys or against composites, so the profile does not rank it.

The same measurements for each material, so you can compare them. Each row names the key condition under the value; the full conditions and methods are in the numbered notes under Technical details. Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Structural parts: T6 and T651 plate with 255 MPa minimum proof stress and 2.70 g/cm3 density.
  • Machined plate parts: the Yieh and thyssenkrupp datasheets both name machining as the main plate use.
  • Welded structures and shipbuilding: the Gleich datasheet lists them among the applications.

Watch out for

  • Weld zone: strength is lowered, according to the thyssenkrupp datasheet.
  • Chloride: pitting and intergranular attack in lab tests, with more pitting at 50 °C than at 25 °C.
  • Machining dust and fine chips: combustible, according to the Hydro 6xxx SDS.
  • No spacecraft, cryogenic, radiation or outgassing data for 6082 was found in an opened source.

Aluminium alloy 6082 is a strong, machinable Al-Mg-Si-Mn structural alloy. In T6 and T651 plate its datasheets give a minimum proof stress of 255 MPa and tensile strength of 300 MPa, with density 2.70 g/cm3. Its weak points are the strength loss in welds, pitting in chloride solution, and fire risk from fine machining dust. No spacecraft or cryogenic data for 6082 was found.

Corrosion and compatibility

What happens when it meets other materials and environments.

Corrosion and compatibility
EnvironmentConcernWhat happens
Chloride solution, 1 and 5 wt% NaCl at 25 and 50 °C (immersion and electrochemistry) moderate Corrosion rate rises with chloride concentration, and pitting is more marked at 50 °C.1
Seawater, weather and stress cracking (supplier rating for EN AW-6082 plate) low The plate supplier rates corrosion resistance as good in seawater and very good in weather and against stress cracking.2
Corrosion details
#EnvironmentDetailsTest conditions
1 Chloride solution, 1 and 5 wt% NaCl at 25 and 50 °C (immersion and electrochemistry) At 25 °C the rate was 0.587 and 0.865 mg/(m²·h) in 1 and 5 wt% NaCl. At 50 °C the samples gained mass because corrosion products stayed on the surface. The paper says the rate rises with chloride concentration, that pitting is more pronounced at 50 °C, and that the highest temperature gives the highest corrosion rates. basis laboratory immersion for 7 days and electrochemical tests (cyclic polarisation, EIS) on one AA6082 sampletemper not statedcomposition Si 0.90, Fe 0.35, Cu 0.07, Mn 0.45, Mg 0.90, Cr 0.04, Zn 0.05, Ti 0.02 wt% as supplied (Table 1)

Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

The sources give a hazard for dust and chips from machining, not for the solid alloy. The Hydro sheet is a family SDS, so its hazard lines are general to the 6xxx series.

Solid alloy
The Hydro 6xxx sheet says the massive product is physiologically inert, and its Section 2 classification is Not classified.
Dust and chips
Dust, chips and fine turnings from machining can ignite more easily, and the dust is combustible. Aluminium dust has a respirable exposure limit of 1 mg/m³ (ACGIH TWA).

If it fails

The failure routes are a weld-zone strength loss and chloride attack. These come from a datasheet and one laboratory study, not from field failures.

Weld zone
The thyssenkrupp datasheet says strength is lowered in the weld zone and recommends alloy 4043 filler wire.
Chloride
In a lab test in 5 wt% NaCl at 25 °C the corrosion rate was 0.865 mg/(m²·h), and the paper says pitting is more pronounced at 50 °C.

Handling and storage

Machining
Use chip breakers, and take care to minimise dust. The Hydro sheet says fine chips and dust are combustible.
Incompatible materials
Keep away from strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidisers. Corrosive substances in contact with the metal can give off flammable hydrogen.

Failure risks

Failure risks
FailureTrigger and consequence
Strength loss in the weld zonemoderate severityFusion welding of 6082 without post-weld treatmentThe thyssenkrupp datasheet says 6082 has very good weldability but strength is lowered in the weld zone, and recommends alloy 4043 filler wire when welding to itself (5356 when welding to 7005).
Pitting and intergranular corrosion in chloride solutionsmoderate severityChloride exposure (NaCl at 25 and 50 °C in the lab test); the paper notes 6xxx alloys are susceptible to pitting and intergranular corrosionCorrosion rate rises with chloride concentration, and pitting is more pronounced at 50 °C. The paper gives no damage or life figures.

Handling and storage

  • Fine dust and chips from machining can ignite, and processing should be done with care to minimise dust. Keep the material away from water and moist air during processing, since the SDS says they should be avoided. Incompatible with strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidisers, and corrosive substances in contact with the metal can produce flammable hydrogen gas.
  • Machining swarf in T6 and T651 breaks into tight coils when chip breakers are used, so chip breakers should be used.
