Why it exists

PA66-GF30 is a glass-filled nylon for machined structural and wear parts that need stiffness and heat tolerance. Mitsubishi gives a flexural modulus of 4.48 GPa for Nylatron GF30, and Ensinger gives 681000 psi for TECAMID 66 GF30. Both makers aim the grade at gears, structural housings and other engineering parts, and both give a glass content of 30%.

Where it's used

Gears and wear parts

Ensinger lists gear manufacturing and excellent wear properties among the target industries for TECAMID 66 GF30.

Machined structural parts

The same sheet lists power engineering, the automotive industry and the construction industry among the target industries for this grade.

Recipe

(C12H22N2O2)n polyamide 66 repeat unit, with 30% glass fibre filler

PA66-GF30 is polyamide 66 (nylon 66) filled with 30% glass fibre. Polyamide 66 is made by polycondensation of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid, and the glass fibre is mixed in as a reinforcing filler. Two datasheets cover this grade: Nylatron GF30 (Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials) and TECAMID 66 GF30 (Ensinger).

What PA66-GF30 is made of
IngredientShare of the weightWhat it does
Polyamide 66 (matrix) (C12H22N2O2)n Repeat unit and formula as printed in the Wikipedia nylon 66 article The continuous plastic matrix. Its repeat unit joins a six-carbon adipic segment and a six-carbon diamine segment through amide (-CO-NH-) groups, and the matrix holds the fibres in place.
Glass fibre (filler) SiO2-based glass 30% glass fibre by the grade name Reinforcing filler at 30% of the compound, as printed in both datasheets. Glass fibre is strong in tension, and combined with the resin it resists both tensile and compressive loads.

How it compares

The two sheets for this grade differ most in water uptake, density and elongation, so the rows show each maker's printed values and are not a ranking. The Mitsubishi sheet gives a density of 1.29 g/cc, and the Ensinger sheet gives 1.34 g/cm3. Both figures were kept rather than averaged.

The same measurements for each material, so you can compare them. Each row names the key condition under the value; the full conditions and methods are in the numbered notes under Technical details. Compare every grade in the family.

Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Stiff machined parts: 4.48 GPa flexural modulus and 204 °C deflection at 1.8 MPa (Mitsubishi Nylatron GF30).
  • Wear parts: Ensinger lists excellent wear properties and gear manufacturing as target uses for TECAMID 66 GF30.

Watch out for

  • Water uptake: 5.5 % at saturation on the Mitsubishi sheet, against 0.30 % on the Ensinger sheet.
  • Strong acids and strong alkalies are rated unacceptable for this grade.
  • Density and tensile modulus differ between the two sheets, so check the sheet from your supplier before design.

PA66-GF30 is a stiff, glass-filled nylon for machined structural and wear parts. Its long-term limit of 104 °C in air and its water uptake differ between the datasheets, so the test conditions should be checked before design.

Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

The handling sheet for a glass-fibre PA 66 from another maker says the product is not subject to labelling. No GHS record for this grade was read.

Classification
The handling sheet prints 'none' for special risks and for components subject to labelling, and it classes the product as an article exempt from REACh registration.
Fire
Burning gives carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and traces of hydrogen cyanide, according to the same sheet (section 7). Firefighters should wear breathing apparatus.

Water

The datasheets for the two makers print different water uptake figures under similar test wording.

After 24 hours
Mitsubishi prints 0.30 % after 24 hours' immersion. Ensinger prints 0.25 % at 24 hours, both by ASTM D570.
At saturation
Mitsubishi prints 5.5 % at saturation and Ensinger prints 0.30 %. The figures were not averaged, and the test wording differs between the sheets.

If it overheats

The limits are set by the datasheets, not by a field incident.

Long-term limit
Mitsubishi prints 104 °C as the long-term maximum service temperature in air, and 204 °C as the deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa. Ensinger prints 230 °F for long-term service and 338 °F for intermittent service.

Handling and storage

  • Before machining, bring the stock to room temperature or store it for at least 24 hours under normal climatic conditions, as the handling sheet advises.
  • Store horizontally, dry and protected against climatic influences.

Mitigations

  • Keep long-term service at or below the 104 °C limit printed for air, and check the TECAMID value of 230 °F as well.
