Why it exists

Mu-metal is used to shield sensitive electronics from static and low-frequency magnetic fields. It is a soft nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy with nominal 80 % Ni and 5 % Mo, and its high permeability gives a low-reluctance path for the field. The MuMETAL sheet datasheet gives a DC permeability of at least 400,000 at 0.005 Oe and an AC permeability of at least 75,000 at 60 Hz. The saturation induction is 0.75 T, and the Curie temperature is 420 °C. The sources read give it a yield strength of 160 MPa in the final annealed state, so it is chosen for its magnetic performance, not for its strength.

Where it's used

Magnetic shields and sensors

MuMETAL is used in high quality magnetic shielding, current sensors and high precision current transformer cores. Permimphy is used for relays, stepper motors and magnetic sensors.

Spacecraft magnetic cleanliness

NASA SP-8018 lists Mu-metal as an example of a soft magnetic material to consider for spacecraft magnetic cleanliness, and warns that shielding by a highly permeable container can create problems.

Recipe

Nickel-iron-molybdenum soft magnetic alloy, nominal 80 % Ni and 5 % Mo by weight, balance Fe, with Mn 0.50 % and Si 0.15 % nominal (CarTech HyMu 800 type analysis)

Mu-metal is a nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy, nominally 80 % Ni and 5 % Mo, with balance Fe and small manganese and silicon (CarTech HyMu 800 type analysis; MuMETAL sheet typical composition 80 Ni, 5.0 Mo, Mn 0.3 to 0.5, Si 0.1 to 0.4). Its magnetic properties come from a final anneal in dry hydrogen; the HyMu 800 datasheet gives 2050/2150 °F (1120/1177 °C) for low-frequency response, and the Permimphy datasheet gives 800 to 1150 °C.

What it can do

Shield a field

400000 DC permeability

measured

The MuMETAL sheet gives a DC permeability of at least 400,000 at 0.005 Oe, and at least 75,000 at 60 Hz and 0.4 A/m for AC.

Saturate at low field

0.75 T

measured

Saturation induction is 0.75 T in the MuMETAL sheet and 0.8 T at 20 °C in the Permimphy datasheet. The alloy saturates at low fields, which keeps its hysteresis loss low in AC circuits.

Weight

8.7 g/cm3

measured

Density is 8.7 g/cm3 in the MuMETAL sheet, and 0.316 lb/in3 in the HyMu 800 datasheet.

Strength when annealed

530 MPa tensile

measured

In the final annealed state a supplier page gives 530 MPa tensile, 160 MPa yield and 45 % elongation. Soft annealed strip in the Permimphy datasheet has a tensile strength of 500 to 700 N/mm2.

How it compares

The alloy is chosen to shield a field, not to carry a load, so its low yield strength matters less than its permeability. The density of 8.7 g/cm3 is the figure to weigh against any alternative shield.

Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Shielding sensitive electronics from static and low-frequency fields: at least 400,000 DC permeability and 75,000 AC permeability at 60 Hz.
  • Current transformer cores and relay parts, as the datasheets list.
  • Spacecraft magnetic cleanliness design, where soft magnetic parts must be chosen with care.

Watch out for

  • Soft and weak: 160 MPa yield in the final annealed state.
  • Heavy: 8.7 g/cm3, so a shield adds mass.
  • Permeability is lost after shock or forming, and the alloy needs a re-anneal to recover.
  • No corrosion rate or flight record was found for the alloy; the only statement is a manufacturer's claim that no coating is needed.
  • The only hazard codes found are for nickel metal, not for the alloy.

Mu-metal is a soft nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy with very high permeability, nominally 80 % Ni and 5 % Mo, used to shield sensitive electronics. It is heavy and weak, and its permeability depends on a careful dry hydrogen anneal and on keeping the part free of shock and deformation. Spacecraft use is documented as design guidance; no flight record was found in this run.

Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

The hazard classes in the sources are for nickel metal, which makes up about 80 % of the alloy. No separate classification of the alloy was found.

Nickel as a substance
PubChem's GHS record for nickel lists H317 allergic skin reaction, H351 suspected cancer and H372 organ damage from repeated exposure, with signal word Danger.
Alloy as handled
No health classification of the 80Ni-5Mo alloy itself was found in the sources read.

If it fails

The failure routes in the sources are mechanical and thermal. None of them is a flight result for mu-metal.

Shock and forming
Severe shock or further mechanical working after the anneal lowers the permeability in the affected areas. A re-anneal can restore it.
Poor anneal
Oxidation or contamination during the hydrogen anneal, or plastic deformation of the treated part, degrades the magnetic properties.
Mass
At 8.7 g/cm3 the alloy is heavy, so a shield adds mass to the spacecraft or instrument.

Handling and storage

Clean before anneal
Remove oil, grease, lacquer and contaminants before annealing. Separate parts with inert powder such as magnesium or aluminium oxide.
Anneal in dry hydrogen
The HyMu 800 datasheet recommends an oxygen-free, dry hydrogen anneal with a dew point below -40 °C, held 2 to 4 hours at 1120 to 1177 °C (2050/2150 °F).

Failure risks

Failure risks
FailureTrigger and consequence
Permeability loss from shock or plastic strainmoderate severitySevere shock, forming or further mechanical working after the final annealThe Magnetic Shield page says the enlarged grains are susceptible to severe shocks or further mechanical working, and the permeability will decrease in those areas. A re-anneal can restore it.
Contamination or oxidation during the annealmoderate severityHeat treatment without a protective atmosphere, or with parts not cleaned or handled with carePermimphy says a protective atmosphere is essential to avoid oxidation, that treated parts must avoid plastic deformation which degrades the magnetic properties, and that parts must be degreased and cleaned first.

Side effects on surrounding parts

Side effects on surrounding parts
AffectsEffect
Mass of a shield or cored componentThe MuMETAL sheet gives a density of 8.7 g/cm3, so shields and cored components add mass.

Handling and storage

  • The Carpenter sheet says oil, grease, lacquer and all other contaminants must be removed before annealing, and parts should be separated by an inert powder such as magnesium or aluminium oxide during the hydrogen anneal. It recommends an oxygen-free, dry hydrogen anneal with a dew point below -40 °C, at 2050/2150 °F (1120/1177 °C), held 2 to 4 hours.
  • The Permimphy sheet recommends pure dry hydrogen for the anneal, between 800 and 1150 °C, with anhydrous inert powder to keep parts apart.
