What is Magnesium alloy EV31A (Elektron 21) used for?

Uses recorded in the sources include Transmission and gearbox housings; Radar parts and torpedo parts (military).

Why it exists

EV31A is a casting alloy developed by Magnesium Elektron as a more producible alternative to the yttrium-bearing WE series of alloys. The ASM abstract says it gives greater strength at temperature and corrosion resistance than sand casting alloys such as ZE41A. The datasheet calls it a high strength, fully heat treatable alloy for use up to 200 degC, aimed at motorsport and aerospace. USGS lists magnesium on the 2025 critical minerals list.

Where it's used

Transmission and gearbox housings

The Polish study names sports-car gearbox housings and helicopter gearbox housings. The Bell Helicopter abstract describes EV31A-T6 rotorcraft transmission housings.

Radar and torpedo parts

The Polish study names radar parts and torpedoes among military uses.

How it compares

The USGS says aluminum and zinc can substitute for magnesium in castings and wrought products, and that magnesium's light weight is an advantage over them in most applications, although its high cost is a disadvantage. This profile holds no strength-per-mass figures for aluminum or zinc, so it does not rank EV31A against them. The Polish study's as-cast values are below the datasheet minimums, so only the T6 datasheet rows are used for comparison.

The same measurements for each material, so you can compare them. Each row names the key condition under the value; the full conditions and methods are in the numbered notes under Technical details. Other materials are shown beside it; each was measured under its own conditions, so open its page before comparing closely. Compare every grade in the family.

Why choose it, and why not

Good for

  • Castings for transmission and gearbox housings that must hold strength up to 200 degC. The Polish study and the Bell Helicopter abstract name these uses.
  • Parts where a heat treatment after casting is acceptable, since the datasheet gives a T6 route for optimum properties.
  • Parts that are welded by TIG with heat treatment after welding, as the datasheet describes.

Watch out for

  • As-cast strength. The as-cast study sample was below the norms, so the T6 treatment is not optional.
  • Temperature. The as-cast sample lost much of its strength at 200 degC (168 MPa tensile against 192 MPa at 20 degC).
  • Corrosion. The datasheet's salt spray rate is an upper limit. No immersion data for this alloy were read.
  • Fire. The GHS statements for magnesium metal include flammable solid (H228) and catches fire spontaneously if exposed to air (H250).

EV31A is a heat-treatable magnesium casting alloy rated for use up to 200 degC, with a manufacturer datasheet that gives T6 and welding routes. The as-cast values from the Polish study fall below the norms, so treatment is needed. Corrosion data are limited to a salt spray upper limit.

Risks and side effects

Hazards to people, what happens when a cell overheats, and how the material is handled and stored.

For people

The only hazard data opened is PubChem's GHS data for magnesium metal. It is element-level, not a classification of EV31A as supplied.

Fire statements
Magnesium metal is listed as a flammable solid (H228), as catching fire spontaneously if exposed to air (H250), and as releasing flammable gases on contact with water (H260, H261). Self-heating is also reported (H252).
Not covered
No safety data sheet for the alloy was opened, and no dust or fume data for machining or welding was found.

If it fails

The failure routes come from the Polish as-cast test, the datasheet's welding note and the GHS statements.

As cast
The as-cast sample reached 99 MPa 0.2% proof stress and 192 MPa tensile strength at 20 degC, below the norm values printed in that study.
Heat
At 200 degC the as-cast sample reached 69 MPa proof stress and 168 MPa tensile strength.
Welds
The datasheet says castings should be heat treated after welding to obtain optimum properties.

Handling and storage

Water
Contact with water releases flammable gas (H261), so keep the metal dry.
Welding
Weld by TIG with a similar filler rod, then heat treat the casting.

Failure risks

FailureTrigger and consequence
Low strength in the as-cast conditionhigh severityUse of the alloy without the T6 heat treatmentThe as-cast study sample gave 99 MPa 0.2% proof stress and 192 MPa tensile strength at 20 degC, below the norm values printed in that study (145 MPa and 248 MPa). The study says heat treatment is needed.
Strength drop at 200 degCmoderate severityService at the top of the rated rangeThe as-cast study sample gave 69 MPa 0.2% proof stress and 168 MPa tensile strength at 200 degC, against 99 MPa and 192 MPa at 20 degC. The datasheet rates the alloy for use up to 200 degC.
Lower properties after weldingmoderate severityWelding without a post-weld heat treatmentThe datasheet says castings should be heat treated after welding to obtain optimum properties.
Fire or flammable gas from magnesium metalhigh severityContact with water (H260, H261) or exposure to air of pyrophoric forms (H250)The GHS statements say the element can release flammable gas, catch fire spontaneously or be a flammable solid (element-level, not the alloy as supplied).

Handling and storage

  • The GHS statements say that contact with water releases flammable gas (H261). Keep the metal dry and away from water.
  • The datasheet says TIG welding is possible with a filler rod of similar composition, and that castings should be heat treated after welding.
  • The datasheet says health and safety information is available for its products. This run did not open an SDS for EV31A, so read the supplier's SDS before cutting, grinding or welding.

Mitigations

  • The datasheet gives a T6 treatment for castings, 8 hours at 520 degC, hot water quench at 60 to 80 degC or polymer quench, then 16 hours at 200 degC and air cool, to obtain optimum mechanical properties.
