name: Monel 400
abbreviation: Alloy 400 (UNS N04400)
role: corrosion-resistant solid-solution nickel-copper alloy
category: metals
type: nickel-superalloys
summary: |
Monel 400 (UNS N04400, W.Nr. 2.4360 and 2.4361) is a single-phase nickel-copper solid-solution alloy with at least 63.0 percent nickel plus cobalt and 28.0 to 34.0 percent copper. Special Metals says it can be hardened only by cold working, and that it combines high strength and toughness with excellent resistance to many corrosive environments, especially seawater and hydrofluoric acid. Annealed material is the softest condition: Special Metals gives 75 to 90 ksi tensile for annealed rod and bar, and ATI gives 75,000 psi typical for annealed plate, sheet and strip.
best_for: Seawater, hydrofluoric-acid and reducing-acid service, and marine valves, pump shafts and fasteners, where corrosion resistance matters more than high strength
weakest_at: Stagnant seawater (crevice and pitting corrosion), caustic at high temperature and stress (stress-corrosion cracking), and low strength in the annealed condition

gaps:
  - No corrosion rate, critical pitting temperature, ASTM G48 result or stress-corrosion threshold was printed in the sources read. The seawater, hydrofluoric-acid and stress-corrosion entries are qualitative.
  - No fatigue value is recorded. Special Metals Tables 18 and 19 (fatigue strength of rod and of sheet) and the S-N figures were not transcribed.
  - Low-temperature tensile (Table 6), Charpy impact (Tables 13 to 17), torsion (Table 7), compression (Table 8), shear (Tables 9 and 10), tear (Table 11) and bearing (Table 12) data were not transcribed.
  - No numeric maximum service temperature is printed. Special Metals names ASME allowable-stress ranges up to 800 F (Section III) and 900 F (Section VIII Division 1) without stress values, and ATI says creep resistance should be considered above about 650 F (343 C), so max_service_temp is left out.
  - No numeric minimum service temperature is printed. Wikipedia says the alloy does not undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition even when cooled to the temperature of liquid hydrogen, but gives no number, so min_service_temp is left out.
  - Special Metals Table 4 values are composite ranges for various product sizes and are not specification values (footnote a). ATI values are typical, and the ATI product-page minimums are for plate only.
  - The ATI product-page bar composition table places its nickel value in a column that does not match the other tables, so no bar composition was used. Composition comes from Special Metals Table 1 and the ATI plate table.
  - 'Densities differ by source: 8.80 g/cm3 (Special Metals), 8.83 g/cm3 (ATI data sheet) and 8.84 g/cm3 for plate (ATI product page). The first two are recorded; the product-page value is left out to avoid a third density row.'
  - electrical_conductivity (about 34 percent IACS, Wikipedia) is not in property-canon.yaml, so it uses a snake_case name until a canonical entry exists. Wikipedia gives no temperature or condition for it.
  - No product safety data sheet for solid Monel 400 was read. The hazard entries rely on the PubChem records for nickel (about 63 percent of the alloy) and copper (28.0 to 34.0 percent), which describe the metals, not the alloy.
  - The USGS 2026 nickel summary mentions an executive order on seabed deposits for critical minerals such as nickel but prints no critical-mineral list status, so nickel has no critical_lists entry. Copper is on the US Final 2025 List of Critical Minerals (USGS copper summary).
  - The ASTM, ASME and AMS standard texts are paywalled and were not read. Designations come from the Special Metals product list (ASTM, ASME, AMS, BS, DIN and QQ numbers), the ATI product page and data sheet, and the Wikipedia table.
  - NiCu30Fe is not printed in the Special Metals or ATI datasheets. It appears in the Wikipedia citation title for Monel 400 (NiCu30Fe, 2.4360, N04400, NA13), and that citation is the only source for the EN name.
  - Monel K-500 is a different, age-hardened alloy, and Monel 405 (R-405, the free-machining grade) is a different grade. Their codes are left out. The Special Metals Tables 2 and 3 values are printed for MONEL alloy 400, and footnote a says they also apply to R-405.
  - The Special Metals datasheet is publication SMC-053 dated February 2005, and the ATI data sheet is version 1 dated 2/18/2014. Values may have been revised since.
  - Copper and nickel shares are calculated by Space Mushroom from the printed USGS tonnages, not printed as shares.
  - The ESPI Metals technical data page is a supplier summary and is used only for a qualitative corrosion statement.

Special Metals gives the limiting composition in weight percent, with nickel plus cobalt at least 63.0, copper 28.0 to 34.0, and iron 2.5 maximum, manganese 2.0 maximum, silicon 0.5 maximum, carbon 0.3 maximum and sulfur 0.024 maximum. Nickel and copper are mutually soluble in all proportions, so the alloy is one solid-solution phase (Wikipedia). Special Metals says it is hardened only by cold working.

  risk_groups:
    - title: For people
      level: 2
verdict: Metal flagged by nickel and copper records; no alloy SDS
lead: No safety data sheet for solid Monel 400 was read. The flags come from PubChem records for nickel (about 63 percent of the alloy) and copper (28.0 to 34.0 percent).
      points:
        - label: Nickel record
line: PubChem aggregated nickel GHS lists skin sensitisation (H317, 99.9 percent of reports), suspected cancer (H351, 72.9 percent) and organ damage from prolonged exposure (H372, 99.7 percent).
        - label: Copper record
line: PubChem aggregated copper GHS lists very toxic to aquatic life (H400, 43.1 percent) and very toxic with long-lasting effects (H410, 18.8 percent).
    - title: If a part sees the wrong conditions
lead: These results come from the datasheets and the Wikipedia article, not from field incidents.
      points:
        - label: Stagnant seawater
line: Special Metals says stagnant seawater induces crevice and pitting corrosion, although flowing seawater gives very low corrosion rates.
        - label: Caustic at high stress
line: ATI says high temperature, high stress and high caustic concentration have produced caustic stress-corrosion cracking.
        - label: Overheating
line: Special Metals says the alloy must not be heated above 2150 F, where permanent damage may result.
    - title: Handling and heat treatment
      points:
        - label: Stress relief
line: Stress relief at 1000 to 1200 F for 1 hour, then slow cooling, is strongly recommended against stress-corrosion cracking in certain environments (Special Metals).
        - label: Hot forming
line: Hot forming runs from 1200 to 2150 F, with heavy reductions at 1700 to 2150 F (Special Metals).
why: Monel 400 comes from a nickel-copper ore developed in the early twentieth century, whose nickel and copper were in about the ratio now specified for the alloy (ATI). Special Metals says it combines high strength and toughness with excellent resistance to many corrosive environments, and its name is a trademark now held by Special Metals (Wikipedia). Marine and chemical processing use it because it resists seawater and reducing acids (Special Metals).
  uses:
    - where: Marine and chemical service
line: Special Metals names valves and pumps, pump and propeller shafts, marine fixtures and fasteners, chemical processing equipment, and crude petroleum stills, process vessels and piping as typical applications.
    - where: Heat exchangers and boiler feedwater heaters
line: Boiler feedwater heaters, other heat exchangers and deaerating heaters are typical applications (Special Metals).
    - where: Fuel and water tanks
line: Gasoline and fresh water tanks are typical applications (Special Metals).
    - where: Aircraft structures, historical
line: Wikipedia says Monel metal was used in bulk in aircraft construction, including the frames and skins of experimental rocket planes such as the X-15, though the article does not name the grade.
  can_do:
    - label: Seawater
line: Very low corrosion rates in flowing seawater (Special Metals), and Wikipedia says it resists rapidly flowing seawater.
    - label: Hydrofluoric acid
line: Exceptional resistance to hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations up to the boiling point (Special Metals).
    - label: Strength in the annealed condition
line: Annealed rod and bar give 75 to 90 ksi tensile and 25 to 50 ksi yield, and annealed hot-rolled plate gives 70 to 85 ksi tensile (Special Metals Table 4, composite ranges).
    - label: Stiffness
line: Tension modulus is 26.0 times 10^3 ksi (Special Metals Table 2), and ATI gives 180 GPa for annealed plate, sheet and strip.
    - label: Low temperature
line: Wikipedia says the alloy does not undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition even when cooled to the temperature of liquid hydrogen.
compare: Compare with [Inconel 625](/profiles/inconel-625/), the chromium-bearing nickel alloy on this site. Monel 400 has no chromium in its limiting composition, and its composition is nickel with 28.0 to 34.0 percent copper (Special Metals Table 1). Monel K-500 is a different, age-hardened alloy and is not covered by this profile.

  handling:
    - Anneal in the range of 1400 to 1800 F for short times, in an atmosphere as free of sulfur compounds as possible (ATI).
    - Stress-relieve at 1000 to 1200 F for 1 hour and cool slowly, which Special Metals strongly recommends as a precaution against stress-corrosion cracking in certain environments.
    - Hot form at 1200 to 2150 F, with heavy reductions at 1700 to 2150 F, and never heat above 2150 F (Special Metals).
    - Weld with MONEL Filler Metal 60 or MONEL Welding Electrode 190 (Special Metals). ATI says no preheat or post-weld heat treatment is generally needed.
    - Machine at slow speeds and low feed rates, because the alloy work-hardens quickly (Wikipedia).
  good_for:
    - Seawater and marine parts that need strength with corrosion resistance, such as valves, pump and propeller shafts and fasteners (Special Metals).
    - Hydrofluoric-acid service, including the reacting section of alkylation units (Wikipedia; Special Metals).
    - Chemical processing in reducing acids, and heat exchangers and boiler feedwater heaters (Special Metals).
  watch_out:
    - Stagnant seawater can cause crevice and pitting corrosion, although flowing seawater gives very low corrosion rates (Special Metals).
    - Caustic stress-corrosion cracking can occur at high temperature, high stress and high caustic concentration (ATI).
    - Strength ranges are composites for various product sizes and are not specification values (Special Metals Table 4).
    - Some heats are magnetic at room temperature and others are not, because the Curie temperature sits near room temperature (Special Metals Table 2).
    - Galvanic attack on steel in salt water (Wikipedia).
    - The corrosion entries are qualitative. No corrosion rate or test number was read in this run.
verdict: Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy for seawater, chemical and hydrofluoric-acid service. Its annealed strength is modest, so state the temper on every design, design for flowing rather than stagnant seawater, and stress-relieve where stress-corrosion cracking is a concern.
